Chew Chor Meng starts host variety show in May
Chew Chor Meng walked away as the Best Supporting Actor at the Star Awards 2009 last Sunday. Speaking to the media after receiving the award, he attributed his success to the character in "The Golden Path", which was different from his usual roles.
With difficulties in movement resulting from muscular atrophy, Chew still walked up the stage with all his might, step by step, all by himself, winning a standing ovation.
In explaining his almost speechless and quivering moments on stage, Chew said he only prepared to be a prize presenter at the ceremony and did not expect to win an award.
Having received recognition from the award, Chew said he will put in more effort in his work in future and also revealed that he would be hosting a food variety show starting from May and will even be travelling abroad to China in June for two episodes of the show.
Chew now spends a considerable amount of time exercising, working towards his well-believed recovery. "I've joined the Singapore Disability Sports Council and am actively swimming now. Depending on my own time, I'll exercise about two to three times a week. There are people in the council who are like me or worse condition, so we support each other. In fact I think I'm a lot more fortunate than them," he said.
ReflectionsAfter reading this article, I feel that such courage and determination is really commendable. He tries so hard just to show everyone that he is like any other normal person. He even thinks that he is much more fortunate than others in the Disability Sports Council and hence even tries his best to support each other. The fact that he tries to exercise to improve his condition further shows his determination. We should learn how to appreciate how lucky most of us really are, and work hard to achieve our goals.

Rojak food poisoning
However, that is not my main point. This post is to discuss about the stallholders and their attitudes when in business.Yesterday after I came back from my 3rd Language lessons,I tuned in to the radio 95.8 FM.They were holding a discussion session about this incident then.A quote from a man ,translated into English,"...the shopkeepers may only think about gaining profits, not caring much about the consumers."Though it would not be probable that this happened in this case,I would like to discuss about this topic as it has sparked my curiosity.
Personally, I feel that the shopkeeper should have been more careful while making the Rojak sauce. It is most probably the ingredients used for the sauce . it could have been expired ingredients that caused such an incident yet it could also be an oversight on his part. He should have checked the ingredients used for the sauce and most probably, if possible, tasted the sauce himself. I feel that the shopkeeper could have also used inferior products for his own gain but caused many people to be sick and worse still, caused death to some. In my opinion, to be a good shopkeeper, it is not always about one's personal gain but also about the welfare of one's customers. Concentrating on personal gain does not get us anywhere, in fact, it might even get us into trouble. Always think about the welfare of everyone else most of the time, not only of oneself.

I am rather disappointed as english was supposed to be one of my stronger subjects. I shall work harder, following whatever mentioned above, to improve my subject grade and strive to ace my English.
